About Me

My name is Amy and I’m a 24-year-old dietetic intern that just graduated with my Master’s degree in Nutrition Science from Syracuse University.  I am from Saratoga Springs, New York and love spending my summers here.  I maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle by cooking healthy meals, moving daily, eating my favorite treats, and enjoying life with family and friends!

Background

I’ve spent most of my life residing in Saratoga Springs, a beautiful, small city located in upstate New York.  I started dancing ballet at age 3 and continued all the way up through college.  Unfortunately, I am not dancing anymore at the moment.  I’m not too upset about it because I really felt I needed a new direction in my life.  I graduated from SUNY Brockport with a B.A. in dance and a health science minor.  My undergraduate health science classes are what sparked my interest in nutrition.  It took a lot of hard work and many, many anatomy and chemistry classes but I’m finally doing what I want to do!  Currently, I have successfully completed 2 full years of graduate school at Syracuse University and now have my Master’s degree in Nutrition Science.  I will be entering the dietetic internship program at Syracuse University in the Fall of 2013.

Staying Active

I’ve always been very active when I was in high school.  My mom and dad always cooked healthy meals for our family so weight has never been an issue for me.  I didn’t start going to the gym until my freshman year of college, mainly because I didn’t know much about it.  I started off walking on the treadmill and going on the elliptical for about 30 minutes each day.  Throughout college and graduate school, I regularly took group exercise classes such as cycling, Body Pump, step aerobics, and more.  As life became busier in graduate school, I relied a lot on walking to and from class and attending yoga class 1-2 times per week.  I actually cancelled by gym membership at school and decided not to rejoin my gym at home (something I thought I would never do!).  I’ve found that walking and taking yoga classes at a real yoga studio are what I enjoy doing the most and are activities I see myself sticking with long term.

Food Background

I really love food! I have a very healthy appetite and love cooking and baking.  Baking is what I’m truly good at – there’s nothing like a batch of cookies or cupcakes fresh out of the oven!  I also like to cook and have become more creative with meals since living on my own.  I absolutely love to go grocery shopping and using those fresh ingredients to put healthy and tasty meals together!  Check out my recipe page for some great ideas!

My Health Philosophy

I firmly believe the word diet should not exist!  Diets don’t work, they never have and never will.  Being healthy is all about balance and moderation.  Deprivation only leads to disaster.  It’s ok to give into your cravings, but not to excess.  I strive to eat healthy foods the majority of the time, but also enjoy a daily treat or two.  Balance is key!

  • Soooo I’m a follower on tweeter–and we even tweeted back and forth today and I have NEVER been to your blog! Glad I found it!

It’s no joke being an RD–takes a lot of work so nice going.

Oh, and that’s a perfect philosophy on healthy. Agree 100 percent.

Thanks Lisa! Our eating philosophies are similar and I think it’s the only way to go. I need my treats! I saw on your blog you were taking prereqs for Nursing school. It’s nice to find someone in the blog community who is still in school and is getting into a health profession too!

I move out to Syracuse at the end of this week and I’m very excited! Even if it does snow all the time haha. I don’t know my way around quite yet but I’m sure I’ll figure it out. NC must be a nice change from the cold winters in NY! Thanks for reading along :-).

I totally agree with you about the word diet. It should be a curse word! I never say it. It’s “trying to eat healthier” in my vocabulary!
